80kmph, fifth gear, successfully avoided a pukeko, managed a couple of intersections and only changed into first gear in mistake for third twice. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself. Driving round curves, in particular, reminded me very much of sewing - in fact, at one point I had a strong impulse to get out of the car and clip the curve of the road for a neater edge. Fortunately, I did not mention this to my father-in-law.

When I taught a sewing class to a group of small girls, we had a “driver’s manual” for them to study before they were let loose on the machines. It said things like ‘You are the driver’, ‘Don’t speed’ and ‘If anything scary happens TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE PEDAL!!!’

The bellydancer is impressed. She can only drive an auto!

The whole “Merge Like a Zip” thing fits rather nicely into the analogy. I guess I should only start to worry if I find myself reversing for a few metres at the beginning and end of each trip.
