There are probably people reading this blog who haven’t read Their Eyes Were Watching God.

To whom this applies: I am flattered, nay, touched; but your priorities are so far out of whack I wouldn’t be surprised to see you selling your grandmother for a biscuit.

I haven’t read it, though I could probably piece most of it together from the fragments of your sycophantic ramblings on the subject, much like the New Testament from the early church fathers. Is it good?

Philistine. It is sublime. In my top five favourite books, it varies between a cozy two and three. My top five are pretty fluid at the best of times, position-wise. Sometimes if I’ve recently re-read The Grapes of Wrath, Their Eyes Were Watching God might be pushed down to a four; but even that is not a norful place to be. Better to reign in hell - no, hang on, the other thing. Anyhoo. It has rabies in it: also the phrase “royal diasticutus”, meaning bottom, which I have been unable to find anywhere else in the world. As in “Go to the libe, find a copy of the book and sit you down on your royal diasticutus, stirring not until you’ve read it from cover to cover”.

I don’t have a grandmother left to sell.

Mathew Says:

What kind of person would buy a grandmother?

I had never even heard of “Their Eyes Were Watching God” let alone read it.

Betty Scandretti Says:

It’s “diasticutis”. Fascinating. I can’t quite figure out the etymology, however — diastasis rectus is the splitting of the rectus abdominis during pregnancy, and diastole is the lengthening of a short syllable, or the expansion of the chambers of the heart as they fill. Both sound a little offensive, but then, I guess so… Fascinating.

Betty: It confounds me also. Let me know if you achieve any further insights on the subj; Google is unwontedly reticent. Although I do like the Urban Dictionary definition:

ones posterity, or buttocks

AprilElf: It’s so hard to convey tone over the Internet, isn’t it… should I be relieved for her sake or sorry for yours?

AprilElf Says:

To be honest, I don’t even know myself. It was just an observation, really, devoid of tone.

smokering Says:

Interesting.

I have two grandmothers, but one is distinctly more saleable than the other. It happens that way with grandmothers sometimes.

Deb Says:

NO. Surely that is not possible???? That is one of the books I required last year as 9th grade You Must Read This To Continue Homeschooling literature. I have the vapors.

Smokering Says:

Well, I’m glad to see my readers aren’t a total dead loss. :p It’s an amazing book, isn’t it?
